What to Wear: The Basics
The #1 question clients ask me, when preparing for their portrait sessions: "What should we wear?!"
Let's break-down what makes a foolproof color palette. (examples provided below)
- Pick your statement color. Think either bold or muted: do you want a bright yellow, or a soft grey color? I personally prefer outfits to be opposite of the scenery. If your background is somewhat plain, I would encourage you to wear a vibrant color. If you're posing in front of colorful greenery or fall foliage, however, I would pick a muted palette.
- Pick your complimentary colors. Most often, clients will choose white, black, or jean-blue as their complimentary color(s). This is a great time to pick the color of your pants. Keep in mind that khakis, black denim, and blue jeans are all great options!
- When in doubt, neutrals! Black and white are classic for a reason- they're a timeless selection for your portraits! Don't be afraid to mix creams and khakis, or various shades of grey.
- Accessorize! If you skim my Pinterest boards, you'll see 90% of the photos feature a hat, scarf, or pair of spiffy shoes. They elevate the simplest of outfits and are a wearable prop. I can't say enough about incorporating accessories into your session!
- Patterns: Less is more when it comes to patterns, so I suggest picking one pattern to sprinkle throughout your outfit(s). I can confidently tell you that stripes, buffalo plaid, and leapord print won't look cohesive if mixed. If you want my opinion on your outfit combinations, don't hesitate to send me a picture!! ***When in doubt, avoid large logos or emblems.
